Decommissioning, Deactivation, Decontamination, and Demolition (D&D)
Dade Moeller is helping to reduce the legacy of concern posed by radioactive and hazardous residues remaining in our nation’s structures, properties, and other assets. We are very adept at defining the risks posed to workers, the public and the environment, and developing effective D&D methods and alternatives. Dade Moeller has supported efforts to remediate contamination at DOE facilities and commercial facilities licensed by the NRC or state. For DOE, we have provided radiation protection support to numerous sites for deactivation, demolition, and removal of retired facilities in compliance with DOE and EPA cleanup objectives. On the commercial side, Dade Moeller has years of experience conducting decommissioning surveys and assisting licensees terminate licenses or clear facilities formerly utilizing radioactive materials.
Dade Moeller's efforts to support D&D include the following:
- Developing technical reports, remedial investigations, and sampling and analysis plans dealing with remedial technologies
- Serving on expert panels that provide advice on remedial technology options
- Advising clients and regulators on risks, parameters, technical challenges, and design challenges for radioactive waste vitrification options
- Advising clients on all aspects of radioactive and mixed waste storage, treatment, and disposal issues
- Controlling outdoor contamination areas based on process knowledge, characterization studies, and recent radiological survey data.
- Maintaining programmatic oversight of environmental restoration contractor-controlled burial ground remediation and soil contamination areas
- Development of radiological characterization plans based on the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM)
- Conducting decommissioning surveys of research laboratory and medical facilities
- Preparation, maintenance, and closure of decommissioning funding plans
- D&D support for DOE Sites
Through our efforts Dade Moeller & Associates ensures that our clients’ D&D programs comply with environment, safety, health, and quality regulations, and that their contaminated sites can be released for subsequent use or achieve applicable closure standards.
