National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements

We are proud to announce the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) has elected Bill Kennedy as a member. The NCRP was founded in 1929 as “The Advisory Committee on X-Ray and Radium Protection.” With the vast increase in the use of radiation in the 1950’s, the NCRP was reorganized and charted by the U.S. Congress in 1964 as the “National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements.” The Congressional Charter recognizes the importance and the national character of the NCRP as a nongovernmental, not-for-profit, public service organization with status as an educational and scientific body. The Council members number 75, are elected to six-year terms, and are selected on the basis of their scientific expertise. The recommendations promulgated by the Council provide the scientific basis for radiation protection efforts throughout the country. Governmental organizations including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Public Health Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency utilize the NCRP’s recommendations as the scientific basis of their radiation protection activities. The individuals elected to the Council are recognized as individuals with outstanding scientific skills and the willingness to support the Council’s efforts.

Third Edition of Environmental Health

We are proud to announce the release of Dr. Dade Moeller’s book Environmental Health, which has established itself as the most succinct and comprehensive textbook on the subject. This extensively revised and rewritten third edition continues this tradition by incorporating new developments and by adding timely coverage of topics such as environmental economics and terrorism.

As in previous volumes, the new edition presents balanced assessments of environmental problems, examining their local and global implications, their short- and long-range impacts, and their importance in both developed and less developed countries of the world. The Third Edition also addresses emerging issues such as environmental justice, deforestation, the protection of endangered species, multiple chemical sensitivity, and the application of the threshold concept in evaluating the effects of toxic and radioactive materials.

Environmental Health Book

Whether discussing acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, or more traditional subjects such as the management and control of air, water, and food, Dade Moeller emphasizes the need for a systems approach. As with previous volumes, Environmental Health, Third Edition, offers a depth of understanding that is without peer. While it covers technical details, it is also a book that anyone with an interest in the environment can pick up and browse at random.

Past editions have found wide application in colleges and universities throughout the U.S. as well as in Korea, China, New Zealand, and several of the European countries. Environmental Health, which is being published by Harvard University Press, has a retail value of $65.00. For more information about obtaining this book please contact the Harvard University Press Text at 1-800-405-1619.
